There are two things that could have failed:
1. the hard drive
2. the motherboard
In the case of a failed hard drive. There is no practical way to recover your work. But, a new hard drive might get the laptop working again.
A failed motherboard probably left your hard drive readable. You can buy a USB hard drive enclosure to convert the hard drive to an external drive. You could then use the drive on another computer.

So there is no way to find a way to be able to go to the login screen?
