HP laptop not working

Hello,
I have a HP laptop and it just suddenly stopped working one day. I tried using my friend's battery(she has a laptop like mine) and that didn't work. I also tried using a different charger and charging it for a day. Tried holding down the power button but nothing works. The light does not come on when i plug it in either. Someone suggested to me that the motherboard might be fried, how does this happen? Please help! Thank you
