Hello,
I have bad news for you.
Sorry but if the lap was not connected through a power bar with surge protection, your motherboard fried.
Only a qualified hand-on technician can see to the issue.

get a new batery for it
Thanks for suggestions. Couldn't wait. Rang my tech guy, explained to him, and he suggested the power pack could be the problem. Sure enough, after the computer guys tested it, bought a new power pack - we're back on track again.
PS I did have it connected thru a surge power board, so maybe that protected it to a certain extent.
