Can't log on to windows

My father recently passed away and I have his laptop using windows XP Professional but, he set a password to prevent access. I tried f8 and start mode with no success. I still get the box that states to enter ctrl-alt-del. Then it goes t the enter password box. Is there anything I can do the laptop is nice and I don't wish to trash it.
