Does "disk management" tell you that the drive is in need of formatting?
Windows will default to telling you to format the drive if it can't communicate with the drive electronics. Your hard drive has probably failed and will need replacement. This is common with external drives.
If Windows can't see the hard drive then data recovery is probably not possible.
