Has my external drive become totally useless now??

laptop wont read my wd external drive...the icon 'local disc H:' does come...but i cant open it..when i double click it..laptop will start 'not responding'...i tried using disk management options in the control panel..same result..either wont show the drive or will say not responding..and as soon as i unplug the drive..everything will start working...plz suggest sth

Yes, the external drive appears to be broken.

i did sth suggested by many sites...now i can see my drive in disk management...
i deleted the volume as that comes in th disk options..now when i try to format the drive, it wont format..it will show sth sayin 'ur drive cant be formatted due to I/O error'..whwt is this? n what sud i do???
