Screw it - I took the bull by the tail and faced matters directly. I broke out the drill, crawled into the overhead, and strung an ethernet line with only minimal drywall damage.

Hey there have you tried renewing the ip address?
If not then follow this steps here :
https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/96/
See if that helps if not you should contact your internet provider and tell them the problem they should know what to do better than me.

When I try that, it gives me the message "No operation on Wireless Connection 7 while it has it's media disconnected". I have no idea what that means . . . The wireless adapter shows as working in Device Manager. Also, my ISP is CenturyLink, and they were totally useless.

Method 1-
To rule out and issue with the wired network, I would have you connect the LAN (Ethernet) cable to the computer and try the commands. You can also check the status of the connection in network connections.
Method 2-
Sometimes, the computer is unable to locate the IP address from the router. Such issues can be resolved by a simple reset of the router.
Refer the steps-
a) Locate a pin sized at the back of the router (that would be your reset button).
b) Use a pointed or sharp object to press the reset button for a period of ten seconds and then release.
c) Now, wait for the lights on the router to flash.
d) Once the lights are stable try the commands.
Method 3-
You need to reset the winsock catalog.
Refer the steps-
a) Click on "Start" and type "cmd" (without the quotations).
b) Right Click on the "cmd" icon and select "Run as Administrator".
c) Now, copy and paste the commands one by one and hit "Enter" after each command -
netsh winsock reset
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip stop
netsh int ip start
d) Restart the computer and check.
Method 4-
I would have you refer the article-

Tried most of them already, but I can't understand why the CMD command is telling me that the wireless media is disconnected when it's making a good connection to the router. What does that mean?

I was able to assign a static IP and DNS, and now it will connect, and over and over it will come up with the 'network connected' flag, and about 30 seconds later disconnects and says it could not connect to any wireless networks, which is odd because it just did.

Win XP, latest update. For some reason, the system will connect, and then (according to the ipconfig program) about 30 seconds later it disconnects the adapter. It doesn't matter if I launch a browser or not.
The settings are: Connection Specific Network Connection

A Westel router provided by the phone company.
Get them on the phone and have them ship an new one! You pay for it! Tell them that unless you can use it , you dont want to pay for it, and the cable guy stops by all the time!

Additional info - watching the status in the Wireless Connection Box, the Status will go from 'Associated' to 'Scanning' 8 times, and then disconnects on the 9th scan, and all fields go blank. Also (just for weirdness), when I go to reconnect, every other time the WEP key is gone, but if I his Cancel and then reconnect, it's back.Don't know if it's germane, but a bit odd . . .

Order in the court !
We find the phone company guilty as charged and order that it fixes the router herewith without further delay free of charge to the complainant.
Thank you Mr. ac3mark.
Case is closed!
Mr. ac3mark! Approach the bench for a wee sip of 18 year old scotch.
