Trouble with browers even though windows says I am connected

I have just got a new laptop and am very unfamiliar with Windows 8. Internet Explorer doesn't seem to work at all, I downloaded Google Chrome and that doesn't work either. The only way I can get into the Internet is through the control panel.

Even then, my email account doesn't recognise my email password - WHAT IS GOING ON! HELP, I used to know what I was doing, and now I feel like a complete idiot!

Ok, slow down......

Have you set any kind of NETWORK? If you have never given your machine a "sitting", your firewall is not going to allow any traffic. Are you at home, work, or pubic? Tell your machine!
