Laptop wont open external hdd

so I have an HP pavilion dv6 running windows 7, I have several hdd that iv taken out of other desktops and laptops, I use a Rosewill sata to usb cable to connect them to my laptop. I have one hdd that just wont read I know the hdd works cause I hooked it up to my friends dell laptop and had no problems. its a hitachi hts5450. when I restart the laptop and open bios, the hitachi is listed there, but that it, the laptop wont read it.
If anyone has a solution I would appreciate it.

Go to disk management under control panel and refresh the drive in there.
