No sound through earphones

i was using some headphones and then bought a new pair of earphones and plugged them in and they played audio fine. then i re downloaded the realtek hd audio sytem (i had accidently deleted it). but it crashed 3/4 of the way through downloading and then my laptop rebooted. after switching on again only sound came out of speakers and not through any headphones/earphones. i have tried looking in the control panel under sound and selecting earphones as my device but they don't show up. and my laptop is completely up to date with windows 8. i even restored my computer to the day before my headphones stopped working and it still didn't work.
please can you help i haven't a clue what to do what to do,

i later managed to solve the mystery by going to this link and installing a different version of realtek
