Hey djbruno. I'd suggest that you try to assign the drive a new letter and see it that will fix your issue. You can check out how to do that here: https://support-en.wd.com/
Just click on the corresponding OS and follow the instructions.

its not showing up under disk mngr.....it lights up and blinks ...but not reading. I tried it using and older dell comp. that has xp on it and it works fine. im confused

That's a bit odd, try updating the firmware of the drive and try it with different USB ports on your Dell laptop. If you are sure, that it is not detected in Disk Management, can you see it in the Device Manager or BIOS?
