Hello,
In response to a fix for laptop shutdown. How can this fix work if power adapter and battery are removed. There would be no way the computer can get power. One could hold the start button down forever and nothing would happen.
Am I missing something?

Yes you are. There is residual power stored in the capacitors on the Motherboard. Holding the power button down drains this power and will sometimes erase hibernation settings that stop a laptop from booting.
