Hello,
I recently dropped my boyfriends WD Elements 2TB external hard drive. It dropped from a height of about 1 yard onto carpet. However, once he connected it to his Mac Pro Laptop it wasn't recognized in the my computer section. He has very important data on that drive. When he connects the drive through a USB cord the light comes on and it makes a faint zipping sound like its trying to read. Is there a way to retrieve the data ourselves, or is it physically damaged and we'll have to pay an arm and a leg to retrieve the data off the drive. We were quoted min $900 to $3,600 max, and I just don't have that kind of money.

Please help!!

Sorry I don't know of an DIY hard disk recovery software for the Mac that might recover this data.

Hey Kolony. This is a bit unfortunate. You could try to access the drive with Linux LiveCD and if you succeed to recover your data, but I'm afraid that this might not help if the drive is physically damaged for which the unusual noise is an indication.
Good luck, I hope you're able to retrieve your data.
