Internet Explorer is "waiting for website"

Hello and help please. My laptop is windows 8.1 I dont know the version of IE but was purchased nes in September 2013. Working fine this morning, then when I turned it on later, could not connect to pages, internet explorer just had waiting for ... and hung for ages. I am connected as I am getting emails on the laptop and can use this notepad via the wireless dongle that can connect to 4 at once.
A bit worried I may have a virus as McAfee is not working either. Any ideas on what to do next?

It sounds to me like a problem with your ISP's DNS server. You can try using the free Google DNS and see if it improves things. Information here:
