COMPAQ laptop doesn't go on

The external I hade shorted and from then on the laptop doesn't want to go on. When I pres the on butten the on light goes on for about 5 seconds and then nothing happens. What can I do to make it work do I need new hard ware or something els

You need a professional PC Tech to diagnose the laptop. Almost anything could be burned out after such a shorted power supply.
