Acer: starts to boot and then shuts down

Hello,
I have an Acer Aspire 5742 series laptop.
The computer won't boot. It begins and I see the "Acer Screen" but after 5 secs it shuts down and immediately tries to boot again. The same thing happens over and over again until I remove the battery. I just replaced the battery but that didn't solve the problem.
Ideas?

I suspect a hardware error on the motherboard. Only a qualified PC Tech can diagnose the problem and a fix might exceed the cost of a new laptop.
