If the laptop was turned on when you dropped it the hard drive heads would have bounced off the disk and damaged it. Perhaps the damaged area contained files needed to boot Windows.
I suggest you buy a new hard disk and install a fresh copy of Windows.
Good luck

Thank you for all your help. I have bought a new hard disk and reinstalled windows 7. Unfortunately now I cannot find any wireless connections, I'm being asked to plug in te Ethernet cable? It seems like I'm missing some drivers but I cannot install those without a network connection (I do not have a cable I have a router at home). I have tried to change some settings but nothing seems to work. Is there anything I an do for my laptop to start recognising wireless networks?

You must now reconfigure your wifi network as if you were installing the router for the first time. Certainly that your router must be connected to your ISP with a cable.

Can you pls tell me how do I do that? I keep trying to set up a new network with the cable connected to the router but it doesn't seem to work.

Your router is connected to your ISP's internet service. A router is for wireless. Can you remove the router and directly connect the cable from the wall to your machine? Use the same cable from the wall to the router? I don't know your operating system, if Windows xp, win 7 or Win 8 you must have a tool about establishing a network connection.

A technician may be able to recover them for you and transfer them to the new HD. The charge usually depends on the size.
