can i use my external hard drive with my xbox without messing up my backups from my pc already on there? I hooked up xbox to my external hard drive and it wanted to delete every thing on my hard drive. I have a Toshiba external hard drive portable with 1tetra byte. i just started using the external hard drive and am trying to learn how to use it the right way.

Hi there,
What model of Xbox are we talking about? In general, you are right that letting the Xbox manage the drive, will format the drive. A good solution is to create a FAT32 partition on the drive and let other partitions to be used for PC storage purposes. Sadly, in this scenario, you should backup your stuff to another drive, because formatting and partitioning will erase your data.
In the link below you may find some useful suggestions from the Xbox community.

Hope this helps
