Would you be able to please give me the model number of your external hard drive, so I can be more particular while trying to help? Check your BIOS to whether the drive is recognized there. You specified that the installation of the WD drivers failed. Might you be able to provide for me some more insights about that?

Hey Bee. I'm sorry you're going through such trouble with your drive. Would you please check if it's recognized in Disk Management and post a screenshot of what you see about the drive and the partition there? Here's how to open it: htpp://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1284/
You could try to access the drive via Linux Live USB/CD to see if it's recognized properly and if you can retrieve your data. If that doesn't work, you could try some of the data recovery options listed in this thread here: https://www.tomshardware.com/
Hope that helps.
