Hello anne,
Have you tried connecting your USB device to another computer to see if it's working there? If you haven't I suggest you to do so.
Also, please navigate to the Device manager /if you work with Windows/ and try to find if there are any conflicts within USB mass storage controller marked with exclamation marks in yellow. If there's a need of update of the drive, go uninstall your current one and restart your PC. Windows should automatically load the lates version of the USB controller driver.
You could try to connect another USB device to any of your USB ports of the PC to check if they are working correctly.
