Do you remember doing anything in particular before this started to happen? Newly installed software or OS updates or anything else? Do you get any specific error when you try to access the drive or you just get redirected to your Desktop?
I'd recommend that you update the database of your anti-virus program and run a full scan. Do that with an anti-malware program as well.
Other than that, you can try the HDD with a different computer to see if the same thing happens.
