Hi
I have a dell studio 1735 which suddenly lost the image to the screen, when I power up I get the dell logo briefly in orange then nothing, the laptop continues to boot and plays the welcome sound, I have replaced the small screen convertor, didn't make any difference also I have replaced motherboard still no difference, doe not output to external vdu when pressing f8, do not know where to go from here any input would be greatly received

Sorry for the delay - I was trying to find the user manual to ensure you are pressing the right key to switch to an external monitor. I fear you are using the correct key, but forgetting that the [Fn] button also has to be pressed (so its [Fn] + [F8] .

Can you see anything at all on the screen? it might be very feint and you might need to catch the light on the screen right to be able to see it. Using a torch is often helpful here. If you can see something (but you have to know where things are on your desktop to know what to look for) then your backlight has failed and it will need a new screen.

I know you have changed the "converter" (did you mean INVERTER?). I have changed a few of these , but found sometimes they have to be the exact same one for the device. They definately have to be the one for the model of machine, but some are really fussy.

Hi Brian

Yes it is the invertor not convertor, when I boot I get the dell logo on screen with the loading bar in orange then it flickers and disappears after that just a black screen also when it has been on a while my backlit keyboard lights stops working

Hmmm ...

Try removing the hard drive completely and then try to boot. It should stay on and tell you there is nothing to boot from. If it goes off again I fear there may be a solder joint on your motherboard that may be heat sensitive. When it powes on and heats up it might be opening so it wont display anything.

I replaced the motherboard and it didn't make any difference, do you know if the invertor is the same for the matte lcd screen or the glossy wuxga

Did you try booting without a hard drive?

I have no data for the inverters, so I dont know if they are compatible. my gut feeling is that they would be, but I could be oh so wrong.

What puzzles me is that if the screen is faulty then I still should be able to switch to a outside vdu? but it won't activate it, so I presume the problem lies somewhere else, the only things not been replaced is cabling, and cpu

Im surprised that if you have changed the motherboard as well that the condition persists. I would also have expected the external monitor to work. Can you get to the BIOS screen?

Ah - so your monitor is working and therefore we are chasing a non - existent hardware issue.

The problem now is more like a formatting issue. Does your BIOS have the capability to switch between hard drive formats? I cant remember the types available without going to a laptop but Im sure you will find it if its there - its something like a choice between AHCI or IDE or possibly more.

A couple of posts ago you said
Its got me puzzled can get to bios screen
. From this I thought you had pressed [F2] on boot and got a BIOS screen to show.

Yes (forgot that bit). Can you try pressing [F2] repeatedly as soon as you boot and see if it lets you view anything for longer than a moment?

Unfortunately my time here runs short. I will try to keep abreast of this thread during the next 2 days, but I wont really be able to help further for about 2 days. Hope you get this sorted. Please keep this thread updated - someone else might have an answer for you.

Dell use the [F2] button to enter BIOS so basic settings can be changed. I asked for this test to see if the very basic part of your laptop worked with using the minimum of resources possible. The only thing we havent looked at is your memory. try changing it or if you have 2 sticks take one out and try it. if it doesnt work remove the stick that is in and swap it for the other one. then test it again. If you cant get it to from here there must be something wrong with your machine. The only other thing I can think of is that your screen (or connections to it) must be faulty or there is a heat sensitive connection on your motherboard. I know you have changed the motherboard, but I cant see why the external monitor wont work either.
