Hello markjhun,
What type of operating system do you use? When did you get this error for the first time? Please, try to you restart the laptop and use a bootable USB if you have one or you could try to make it on another PC with similar OS. I assume that you are working with Windows.
If that is the case, please refer to this link leading to the MicroSoft's knowledge base and check if the steps provided there would be helpful: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3103656/an-operating-system-wasn-t-found-error-when-booting-windows
Make sure that the HDD on your laptop is the first priority bootable drive. You can do so by entering in the BIOS and then Storage menu.
