This is the true resolution to this dilemma, I have only added two things to this posting: https://forums.techguy.org/threads/no-disc-recording-software-found-in-itunes-8.780824/
Have I solved the " I Tunes cannot detect burning software" issue?
I have found an answer to this problem......
I can now re-create the "I tunes not recognizing any burning software" issue at will, and fix it in a heartbeat. This will also take care of that "Itunes registry values....." message that pops up right before the main I Tunes program begins.

IT APPEARS THAT WHEN GEARAspiWDM GETS INSTALLED IT DOES NOT CREATE A "MULTI-STRING VALUE", IT CREATES A "STRING VALUE", WHICH DONT DO NO GOOD. THE UPPERFILTERS VALUE MUST BE A MULTI STRING VALUE, JUST NOT A "STRING VALUE".
1. Download the latest gear driver at:
http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.php
2. Once that is installed you have to DELETE the UPPERFILTERS entry in your system registry, AND CREATE A NEW UPPERFILTERS VALUE at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 (of course you knew once you get there just click on "favorites" in your system registry and add it your favorites).
__________________________________________________________
YOU WILL BE DELETING THE UPPER VALUE: DONT WORRY YOU WILL BE CREATING A NEW ONE. __________________________________________________________
GO HERE IN THE SYSTEM REGISTRY:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318
FIND THE UPPER FILTER VALUE AND DELETE IT!
FOR VISTA USERS, GO do Windows "Start Search" and type in Regedit. Run Regedit.exe and you will find the HKEY.
1. WHILE IN HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 using the system registry editor: EDIT > NEW > MULTI STRING VALUE. IT MUST BE A "Multi String Value".
2. NAME IT UpperFilters.
3. Once it's created and named, right click on it and select "Modify".
4. Enter this into the box that will pop up: GEARAspiWDM AS SOON AS YOU TYPE THE GEARAspiWDM PRESS ENTER. This "carriage return" is required. CLICK OK and exit the pop up box.
THE VALUE FOR THE UpperFilters should be: REG_MULTI_SZ (Which means it is a multi string value).
5. REBOOT

Right
After much ferreting about in the innards of Windows XP I think I have something concrete, at least in my particular instance:-
1) Do the Microsoft thing and delete the registry entries for BOTH UpperFilters and LowerFilters.
2) Reboot
3) Reinstall iTunes 9 or whatever you were using, the Repair option was what I used from the Change option via Control Panel.
4) iTunes still cannot find drives and you get the registry problem message at start up.
5) Download this patch from Roxio (you may even need to install some version of Roxio, I have Roxio 2010 Pro)
http://patches.sonic.com/PX/pxengine1_08_34a.exe
See the page at https://forums.support.roxio.com/topic/3755-no-drive-detected/ for more info
6) Reboot
7) You not done yet!
8) Make sure the Gear drivers are installed
9) Run regedit and go to the Upper/Lower filters entry as above
10) There should exist a LowerFilters entry PXHelpxxx or similar but NO UpperFilters entry.
11) Create an UpperFilters entry in the same registry hive
Thats Edit | New Multi String Value
paste the GEARAspiWDM in the UpperFilters entry and save the Registry by exiting
12) Reboot
13) Check itunes/roxio/nero can detect burners
14) Check itunes can now burn CDs
I have checked the resultant CD and it was OK.plays in an ordinary portable CD player.
It may not work for all but it worked for me!
Phew!

The key to my solution in my case was the Roxio update, but its not included in the latest Roxio software.

If you cant download that driver from Roxio contact me.
Can these answerers stop spewing all this technical bullshit and just give a simple download or fix that anyone can understand? Really, I don't care about the reason for the problem, I just want a fix!!!!!!

Apple are really hopeless at software (itunes is huge bloatware) and at support. See my comments later down this list (click see all comments). Note it was the Roxio "update" that fixed this for my setup, I already had the GEAR drivers loaded. Note also that Apple does not admit to the programming error that results in itunes looking for a non existent drive!
I cannot get this to work either, have tried many of the fixes. I do not have daemon, nero, etc. This is absolutely ridiculous!
Ann:
I'm guessing this started when you downloaded and installed iTunes 8.2. That's when I began to experience a similar problem. In an unusual move, iTunes then released ver. 8.1.1. According to the iTunes support people, downloading and installing this fixes the problem, but Apple seems to be reluctant to publicly state this. See my entire correspondence with them below.
If you've not done so already, you may want to run iTunes Diagnostics (select "Help", then "Run Diagnostics"). When the process is finished click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and then paste the results in an email to Apple at iTunesStoreSupport@apple.com. That way, they can look at what is going on with your system.
My rather frustrating inteactions with them are below. It is working now, and I did get some free songs out of the mess:

I don't understand Apple's reluctance to be more forthcoming with this. Judging from the amount of complaints on Apple's web site and others, it looks like it was a widespread problem.
It is disappointing to me as an Apple stock holder (really!) that they won't post this information publicly. However, I'm guessing that Apple won't mind if I post your reply on its support forum and other tech forums I have visited seeking an answer to this problem.

Sorry. I guess I wasn't clear. I was asking for a link to this official news from Apple. If it is official, it seems like Apple should declare that publicly. My guess is that they probably have, but I can't find it.
Since I already have installed, removed and reinstalled the prior version so many times, I just want to see something from Apple first. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store. Well I have great news for you today! Our engineers have released the official news that the issue you have been experiencing with CD burning has been resolved in iTunes 8.1.1. This being said, please install iTunes 8.1.1, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Apple website:
https://www.apple.com/itunes/
Furthermore, I have issued an additional five song credits to your "rknaup@sbcglobal.net" iTunes Store account, for the inconvenience and your tremendous amount of patience and understanding. You can use these to buy the individual songs of your choice from the iTunes Store.
When you next sign in with this account, the song credits will appear by your account name (in the upper-right section of the iTunes Store). The next individual song you buy from the iTunes Store will use one of your song credits instead of your primary form of payment (until all credits have been used or have expired). Please note that song credits cannot be used for purchasing songs that are listed as "Album Only."
If you don't see your credits, refresh your account information by signing out and back in to the iTunes Store. You can find both "Sign Out" and "Sign In" within the pull-down "Store" menu. If you don't see this menu, you should need only download the latest version of iTunes from our website for free:
https://www.apple.com/itunes/
If you have any further questions or concerns, please let me know and I would be more than happy to address them for you. Thank you very much for being part of the iTunes Store family, Phil, and I hope you have a great day.
With Warm Regards,
Jeff

Thanks, but I am going to wait until Apple tells me it has discovered a solution to this problem caused by the previous version of iTunes. As you say, you have engineers working very hard on this now, so I am hoping this will not be much longer.

Hi Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store. Wow, very sorry for the "Marlene" mixup, it's been a long day! In response to your question, our engineers have not released an official fix at this point. However, I don't like to see customer's unable to utilize the application to its full potential, and therefore I wanted to provide you with every last bit of information that may prove helpful.
I am not promising that upgrading to 8.1.1 will work, however some customer's have been able to resolve this issue by doing so, and therefore I felt I should pass the information along to you.
Once again, I apologize for the mixup Rich. If you have any further questions or concerns, please let me know and I would be more than happy to address them for you. Thank you very much for being part of the iTunes Store family, and I hope you have a great day.

Marlene? Not sure what that is about. Before installing 8.1.1, let me ask: Is this Apple's official fix, or have some people just coincidentally had some luck? I'd like to hear something officially from Apple.
Rich

Hi Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store again! Now although this issue has not officially been resolved yet, I have some new information which may help. It appears that some customer's have been able to resolve this CD burning issue by downloading and installing the new release of iTunes 8.1.1. It can be downloaded free of charge from the Apple website:
https://www.apple.com/itunes/
I would like to ask that you try downloading this new software, and then responding to this email to let me know how you make out! You may also be automatically prompted to upgrade to iTunes 8.1.1 when you open the iTunes Application, which will lead you through the same process.
I have retained your request to ensure that I receive your reply and can make sure this gets resolved for you, Marlene. Thank you very much for being part of the iTunes Store family, and I hope you have a great day.

Jeff:
Thanks, but as you might imagine, I am reluctant to download another version of iTunes when the last one led to these problems. My CD-DVD burner doesn't work properly since the last download. In fact, I had just imported some old 8mm videos of the family, and was going to burn those to a DVD for my father-in-law's birthday. Couldn't get it working, though. It's too bad, because I had been considering replacing my five year old PC with an iMac. However, I could get this kind of functionality with Microsoft.

Dear Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store. Please note that you still have full access to your purchased music, and can still transfer your purchases to an iPod if you have one. I am very sorry for the inconvenience, however Apple's engineers are working very hard towards a resolution for this issue.
I cannot offer a refund for the purchases you have made this year, however I have taken the liberty of issuing five complimentary song credits to your iTunes Store account "rknaup@sbcglobal.net".
Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience, however I will email you as soon as I have more information for you. Thank you for your patience and understanding, Rich, and I hope you have a wonderful day.

Since time line is so hazy on resolution, how about thiis:
A refund for all my downloaded songs this year. After this is fixed, then Apple can charge my account again. This way, neither of us gets something for nothing.

Hi Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store.

With Warm Regards,
Jeff

With Warm Regards,
Jeff

Rich

Dear Rich,
Jeff, here from the iTunes Store.
Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience, however I will email you as soon as I have more information for you. Thank you for your patience and understanding, Rich, and I hope you have a wonderful day.
With Warm Regards,
Jeff

Jeff:
Since time line is so hazy on resolution, how about thiis:
A refund for all my downloaded songs this year. After this is fixed, then Apple can charge my account again. This way, neither of us gets something for nothing.

I have checked the above registry entry on my XP Pro machine and it does not need altering as it already reflects the entry above being the correct multi string type entry.
The Gear drivers were also updated.
The problem persists.
Both version 8.2 x and 9. x have this problem and its not just on Windows if you read the Apple forums there are similar reports from Mac users.
I have no doubt the above works for some but the problem is more basic than that. itunes is trying to access the DVD/CD writer directly via the hardware instead of through WIndows. You can prove this by disablimg the drive letter for the CD writer in Windows and then rebooting. Go into a DOS command prompt and type D: or whatever the CD drive is and you will get a "drive not found" type message from DOS. It will NOT appear in My Computer either. But when you run itunes 8 or 9 and go to burn a playlist it will say D: is the disc burner but then fail because it can't find it.
The problem lies in the itunes software, because other software (Roxio, Nero, Jetaudio etc) can ALL burn CDs with no problem to the same drive itunes says it cant find.
So no fix for me
The search continues in the absence of any help from Apple (I have yet to receive a reply).

But removing both the upper and lower filter values in that registry entry results in the following message at startup in iTunes
"Itunes Setup Assistant
Warning!
The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing
and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of
installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
So back to the search
Since this occured sometime after version 8 was installed I will try version 7.7 and see what happens

ie remove both upper AND lower filter entries but it only resulted in itunes saying
"Itunes Setup Assistant
Warning!
The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing
and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of
installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
when starting
Trying version 7.7

Your fix worked for me!
I am running Windows 7 with iTunes 9.1.0.79, and had the same burning problem. After installing GEAR driver, I checked this registry address, but found no UpperFilters value, so just added the new values and rebooted.
All seems well, so thanks mate.
