Hello Catherine,
Let's try something else, shall we? :) Please, disconnect the mobile phone from the USB port of the laptop and try to connect the two devices via Wifi or bluetooth. If your smartphone has the option, try to enable the hotspot and share wirelessly your 3/4G internet with the laptop. You have to pair the mobile phone and the lap - my idea is to try the Bluetooth first.
