Letters won't type but numbers do.

I just bought this HP laptop. It took forever to get it set up and now I'm trying to log in with my password. The letters won't type but the numbers will.

I have tried the following and nothing has worked:

fn
Fn + nun lock
Num lock
Fn + shift + num lock
fn + f11

And most combinations of the above keys.

Does anybody have any suggestions before I just throw this thing against the wall as hard as I can?

You may have sticky keys on! Hold down any 1 key until a prompt asks if you want to turn on sticky keys, say no! Try that, BTW what OS?
