Hard drive problem

Hello,
no external hardrive is detected on my pc .My pen drives are detected and work fine with it.
the light glows on the hardrive but its not shown on my computer.
My pc is quite old
here are the specifications:
1.7ghz single core,512Mb RAm and using xp.
reply as soon as possible.

You have an external USB HDD and it's not recognized?

Unplug all other USB devices and reboot.

i disconnectd all the usb devices and rebooted and den connected da external hdd to the usb port.its still not detcted by my pc.the light in the external hdd is glowing.i tell you wat no external hdd are dtected on my pc.my pendrive 5GB is detected.i dont know why???reply asap
