Laptop screen lighting up but nothing displayed?

When the laptop is booted it up the Toshiba boot up screen is displayed, but after that it is just shows a blank screen. Everything is still lit up but nothing is displayed. I tried removing the battery and rebooting the laptop but the problem still persists. We even checked the memory card in the back to make sure it hadn't fallen out somehow. We also tried to hook up the computer to the television to make sure something wasn't breaking in the screen but that didn't seem to be the problem either. The laptop runs on windows 8.1 incase that is required information. Does anyone know what may be causing the problem or how to fix it? Thanks.
