No connection in monitor shown

I have a vga monitor and a dvi CPU I connected the vga cable through an adapter to the dvi CPU.The cpu starts perfectly but the monitor shows no connection. Pls tell me what to do

When you press the monitor display menu button, does it show anything? So in other words, can you make the display brighter, perhaps?
