Hello,
I own a 320GB Western Digital My Book External Hard Drive that I dropped on the floor. After this happened I have tried on many occasions to get the device working. When I plug it in, the green light still comes on, and the computer still makes a sound when I connect it up to the USB port to indicate that it has recognised the device. However, the icon for the device does not appear on the screen, and I cannot access the files. Can you shed any light on whether the problem maybe fixable or if not, is it possible to extract the files? Thanks, Jon

2 solutions :
- Your hard drive is damaged, so no recovery, except if you're extremly rich and you absolutely need the datas.

- the electronic wrapper of the disk is damaged, try to extract the HD and plug it into another system. WARNING : This will VOID the warranty, if any.
