Problem with xbox360 friends connection

Hello my name is lachlan i have a problem with my xbox360. The thing is i can connect to some of my friends like they can live near me or other side of the world but why cant i connect to some other firends of mine. I can play online ok so i dont think it is the local connection. it just does not let me connect to friends and parties and stuff.
