If you just want to connect a desktop PC to a laptop then you buy a USB Wireless adapter for the desktop.
If you have a broadband connection then you buy a Wireless Router and place it between the broadband modem and the desktop.
You can then share files between the two computers. After you change the security settings to allow for file sharing.
