Try this
1. Remove the battery and cable.
2. Press and hold the power button for 58 seconds.
3. Replug and start.

Another Option.
1. Right Click the background picture
2. Click on the view option
3. On the very bottom of the dialog box there should be a check box to either show or hide icons. Click that and it should display the icons again.
