It is possible that their Facebook account was hacked, then someone accessed to their Messenger account and sent you those messages.
To find out if someone has accessed to their account, your contact should review their recent login activity. If they suspect a suspicious login, they should secure their account using this link.
The main risk of an account getting hacked is the use of a simple password, the existence of malware or spyware on a device, or the theft of personal info by entering credentials on a phishing page.
