It's a scam attempt. Block them and report the phone number to WhatsApp.

The person with the number is a trusted friend. Is it possible that they are the one getting hacked and I'm the one getting scammed?

It may be possible. Your friend should visit this link for instructions to take back control of their WhatsApp account, in case if it was stolen.

Got it! and I'm right to think that if someone had hacked my specific phone/Whatsapp account they would have to be seeing things exactly as I'm seeing them, correct? Thank you in advance for responding!!

You are right, but, even if they provide you screenshots or any other info that would lead you to believe that it is your own account or device, you must be careful ! Scammers are continually finding ways to be credible in order to trick their victims.
