it sounds like you're vista download does not have drivers for your wireless adaptor in your laptop.
you need to find out what nic is installed in the laptop and see if dell do a vista driver for it.

you should use driver agent or some like that to c which driver you still need 4 your inspiron
and btw you shouldnt have downloaded vista on your inspiron... it is build 4 xp .... c ya

download and install a program called belarc (google search belarc advisor) it's free
run it, it will do a scan of your system and list all your hardware etc.
from this list you can do a search for a vista driver if there is one.
