Can't record using a microphone in Vista

Hello, I am trying to make a simple voice recording using a simple microphone that came with my Dell computer(jack gets plugged into the back of my computer). I use Sound Recorder and see the voice level moving but when I go to play it back, there is nothing. I have Vista OS. I have made sure nothing is on "mute," volume is set appropriately, etc. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello Sir,

All you can do now is to re-install the sound device driver again,

Then plug everything back and try recording, make sure that the microphone is working fine

Unfortunately, I have the CD for Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi and have tried to install that but it is not Vista compatible according to the message I get during installation attempt. I looked for available Vista driver(s) on the Creative site with no success.
