So, I recently fought a battle with some pretty tough viruses/malware. I got them all, which is great. But somewhere along the line, something got messed up. Now there is no sound in my internet browser, no matter which browser I use. I have windows XP and the internet itself works fine. Additionally, the volume icon has disappeared from the system tray and the computer volume no longer responds to me pushing the volume buttons on the actual keyboard. If anyone thinks they can help, let me know.

Dear Makhai,

Please take a look at the sound drivers and update them. The problem should be arising from

the sound drivers I believe.

Thank you.

I have experienced the same problem. After a week fighting various malware, and ridding the system of all of it, I lost browser sound. Here are the current data:

PC: Dell Studio 540
Intel Dual Core Quad CPU Q8200 2.33GHz
6GB RAM
Vista 64 bit Home Premium SP2

Browsers
Google Chrome 3.0.195.38
IE 8.06.001 - Active Scripting enabled
Mozilla 3.5.6 - Java and Java scripting enabled
Safari 4.0.4 - Java and Java scripting enabled

Flash 10,0,42,34
Java ver. 6 update 17 (testvm.xml says it's working properly)
Shockwave 11.5 (http://www.adobe.com/products/shockwaveplayer/mountainbike_game/ sound works)
Javescript Adsense ads show properly on all browsers
Control Panel -->System-->Devices all shown as working properly

PC Games, WMP & Haupage TV sound works fine

Device Manager reports all device drivers are up to date:
Hauppage WinTV
High Def. Audio Device
Logitech Mic
Realtek High Definition Audio

Updated systems
---------------
DirectX
Java 32 bit
Java 64 bit
Macromedia Flash
Macromedia Shockwave

Youtube and similar videos play without sound.
