Ipod nano wont turn on when not connected

Hello,
hi my ipod nano works just fine when it is connected to the charger but the seconed u disconnect it from the cord it cuts off and dosent cut back on untill u put it back in its cord
my qustion is how do i get it to cut on when its not attached to my computer????
