Try starting in safe mode if you can.
If you can't, there's nothing you can do really, except to reinstall XP. You CAN however get the files off the hard drive, just connect it to a different computer and it will show up in the My Computer area. Just copy/paste the files to the working computer, reinstall the operating system, then copy them back over.
And yes, Windows Updates can do this, especially if you aren't careful when installing Service Pack 3 with XP. You don't want to put your computer to sleep/hibernation/power off while you're doing it, because something like this is bound to happen.
