Problem with my hard drive

Hello,
I have a 20 gigabyte hard disk and as a back up I told myself that a 40gigabyte which my brother gave me would suite me and so he formatted it on windows xp and gave it to me but then when I connected to my computer I can see it in the bios configuration but not in windows why? And what can I do to make things alright?

R-click on My Computer
Manage/Disk Management
If your drive is listed, you might have to initialize it, then format it (Choose NTFS preferably).
