Toshiba L300 Won't Recover

Hello,
I got the blue screen of death on my Toshiba Satellite L300. Rebooted it and it goes nowhere, just a black screen. Tried a number of times to restore it to "Out of the box" state from both the hard drive and the recovery disks but half ways through it encounters an error and shuts down.
Any suggestions on what might cause this and how to get around it?

Figured out the problem.....yet another dead Toshiba hard drive :-(
Replaced it with a Western Digital and all is well.
