Erase everything on hp compaq laptop

Hello,
I am trying to completely erase the hard drive on my laptop. nothing needs to be backed up/saved. when trying to boot from xp cd, it will not boot. cd rom is set to first in bios. I get this message: no boot filename received, pxe 53 ( someting lke that) exiting ....... any help on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks to all in advance!!
