Downloading to external hard drive, and then

Hello, I need some help with a ext hard drive. I have never used one and I am d/L my files and everything else onto to drive, but I want to be able to view what I have on there so far and can not figure out how to do that, sorry I am novice with this area, afterwards I am re-installing back onto my laptop....Help

It should be easy - go to My Computer and double click the external drive ("E" ?) XP should open a new window and you caqn view your files.
