Usb trouble

Hey my name is dana . and i went to plug in my usb cord to the computer to put music on my ipod and nothing popped up ... it wouldnt even regester as a device on my computer ... please help this is very important cause it has all my music on it for my battle idk its complicated to exsplain but if u could help i would greatly appreciate it ...
