Mac wont recognise external hard drives

Hi.ive been using a wd elements hard drive on my mac os laptop and its been working fine but then a message came up and said that it had to force eject the hard drive.now everytime i insert the hard drive it soesnt recognise it.the hard drive works perfectly on my friends laptop.also other hard drives cant be recognised either.any ideas?
