Unable to connect

I was getting blue screen errors on desk top. so I just reloaded window xp I am finally able to get into windows but i was not able to connect to the internet thru explorer. the is no lan connection.My laptop is connected an works just fine. I unhooked my router that the laptop was connected and just had the computer an modem connected to see if this works. It didnt Im not that computer savy any suggestions or should I just by windows 7

Remember to install network adapter driver, think you did not install it. Feel free to have a look on this network adapter configuration article, maybe can help you.

If you can't connect to the internet via Internet explorer perhaps it is locked in Offline mode? If your connection works just fine there are few barriers which prevent you from accessing the internet.
