My gateway laptop suffered from a virus and it has all my precious pictures on it. I can not get pass the screen that allows us to choose either f2 or f10 for boot menu. Once It loads from here it goes to the screen that says start windows normally or do repair. Either option I hit it takes me to a black screen and does not do anything else. I really need these pictures they are the birth of my children and I can not stand not having them. Please any help at all would be great. Thanks in advance!

Hi
Here are a couple of ways you can try (1) start computer when you enter windows hit F8 from the drop down list choose safe mode with networking, then run your anti-virus. It would also pay to download Malwarebytes to do a malware and spyware scan. You can download this free from www.downloads.com when finished swith off computer and start normally.
(2) Repair Install this is for XP you will need your recovery disk or installation disk. This will reinstall XP but leave all you files intact. Follow the steps below.

Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Hit F2 to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
When you see the "Welcome to Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

Do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
If you have Vista you can get the instructions from this site.

Hope this works and you can view your precious pictures again. Copy them on to a disk or flash drive will then have them forever. Good Luck
