Is this a laptop or a desktop and what model is it?
It could be as simple as a driver issue.
click start, control panel, preformance and maintenance.
Click "System", "Hardware", "device manager"
Look to see if any of your sound systems have a yellow mark next to them, if so click that section. You can also right click and select update driver. See if the system will automatically find and install the driver.
Let me know if this helps once we have the computers details we can troubleshoot more options.
