ACER Laptop Keyboard - pressing y gets yr...

Help! We purchased an ACER laptop in December, and while other programs work correctly, for some reason when the y key is pressed, yr is returned. The same thing happens when pressing 7, 75 is returned. It is almost as if it is digitally encrypting on it's own, howevwer it is not happening with all of the keys. The laptop does have an above row of number keys as well as a side key pad to the right. Can anyone help? It wqas bought as a gift, and it's not able to be used to it's capacity because of this problem.
